NEW ORLEANS (NNS) -- Crewmembers from PCU New Orleans (LPD 18) invited residents of the ship’s namesake city aboard for tours in the week leading up the ship’s March 10 commissioning ceremony.

Sailors from the crew led groups of visitors through the ship to view the unique features of the second ship in the San Antonio-class.

“We’ve heard about the ship,”￾ said New Orleans native Kenya Campbell. “To actually get on the ship and see the name of the city on it is something good for the city to enjoy after everything we’ve been through.”￾

Comment: This brings back some memories from my time in the USS Comstock pre-commissioning unit. (The New Orleans is scheduled to be placed in commission today.) There's a lot of hard work and long hours involved but this is a day that the crew will remember with a great deal of pride, and jusifiably so!

Northrop Grumman shipbuilders praised at commissioning ceremony

Speaking to a crowd of more than 5,000, U.S. Sen. David Vitter of La., described the Northrop Grumman-built amphibious transport dock ship NEW ORLEANS (LPD 18) as a ship that "embodies a new culture of technological growth and economic progress not only for the Navy and Marines, but also for the city of New Orleans and Louisiana. This ship represents new processes, design work and engineering that will clearly serve the Navy, Marines and our country very well."

"I want to honor today the talented, dedicated and proud citizens of Louisiana who have produced this magnificent ship behind me," said Sen. Vitter. "Thousands of Louisianans who serve their country, maybe not on the front lines, but they serve us admirably nonetheless."
