LAUNCH OF A WHITE STAR STEAMER
---
There was launched on Saturday from the yard of Messrs. Harland and
Wolff, Belfast, the first of three large twin-screw steamers which are
being built to the order of Ismay, Imrie, and Co., for the White Star
Line, for the service between London and New Zealand, which has for many
years been run in connexion with Messrs. Shaw, Savill, and Albion
Company (Limited). The steamer has been named the Athenic, and will be
followed by the Corinthic and Ionic, sister ships in all respects. She
is 500ft. in length, with a breadth of 63ft., and a depth of 41ft., with
a register tonnage of 12,500 tons. All three vessels will have
exceptionally comfortable accommodation for 94 saloon, 84 second, and
186 third class passengers, in addition to a large cargo capacity.
