Holland America's Nieuw Amsterdam Named in Venice
quote:

(11:20 a.m. EDT) -- After baking in the sun on a sweltering day in Venice, Holland America's new Nieuw Amsterdam got cooled off with a splash of bubbly. The 86,000-ton, 2,106-passenger ship was christened today by Her Royal Highness Princess Maxima of the Netherlands, who pulled a lever onboard to release a Champagne bottle against the hull of the vessel -- a maritime tradition thought to bring ships good luck. It broke on the first try.

New liner’s a New Yorker’s fantasy
quote:

The recently launched Nieuw Amsterdam is the 15th ship in Holland America Line’s fleet, with no more on the drawing boards. Looks like the company saved the best for last.

Due to begin its winter season from home port Fort Lauderdale on Nov. 7, the 2,106-passenger ship emphasizes Holland America’s historical ties to New York – named, of course, Nieuw Amsterdam by the Dutch explorers who purchased it.
