Today in the Charlotte Observer, reporter Leigh Dyer has an article about the Titanic exhibit opening in Raleigh at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. The exhibit runs through January 4th. In the article, a lady by the name of Laurie McKean was a guest at the preview for the exhibit. It turns out that Ms. McKean is the great-great grand daughter of Isidor and Ida Straus. McKean has kept her connection to the Titanic low profile, not joining any of the historical groups around the country. Its uncomfortable for her to be viewed with fascination because of her ancestors. "Especially since I didn't do anything", she said. I am not the hero, they are. "I am an artifact". An interesting part of the article was the question about money. Seems that the Straus fortune has been subdivided among many descendants, leaving most in McKeans generation to fend for themselves. The Straus's have 67 great great grandchildren.
