As it just so happens, I have an approxomite count, but it was done with a
specific purpose. When I started work on Cyberflix' Titanic game, the
president of the company kept saying (and rather grandly) that the new game
would feature just about every room on Titanic.
So, in order to bring him down to earth, I counted out all the inhabitable
compartments and asked if it was in his budget to animate all 1,817 of them.
This brought the scope of the game's playing field into focus and made upper
management realize that they had to pick critcal rooms to focus on, rather
than give the design staff vague instructions to "do it all".
As for the count, my rational was that an "inhabitable comparment" was
defigned as an enclosed space that might ordinarilly occupied by passengers
or crew during the course of the ship's crossing. Therefore, tanks,
cofferdams, expansion joint passeges, wardrobes and closets (generally) and
all those nooks and cranies in the uptakes didn't count, but WC stalls did.
The count by its nature is subjective and approximate. Your results may vary.
