I was searching for an article explaining how scientists determined that smaller "slits" -- and not a long gash -- doomed Titanic. This one from April 1997 is very interesting!

Hi Chris!

It is very easy for anyone trained in ship construction methods of the era to imagine what might have happened during the 6 or so seconds that the ship side was in contact with the ice. The method of construction and the texture of the ice points very firmly to distortion and selective rivet -head failure in t e way of the contact.
