US Consul General to Okinawa Visits USS Essex

USS ESSEX, At Sea (NNS) -- The U.S. Consulate General to Okinawa Raymond Greene, and a Japanese delegation from Okinawa visited forward-deployed amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2), Oct. 8.

The purpose of their visit to Essex was to better understand the humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) capabilities of the ship and embarked Marines of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU).

Two Navy investigations into synthetic marijuana use have snagged 64 San Diego-based sailors, including 49 from the carrier Carl Vinson, and already have led to several discharges.

Sailors from the attack submarine San Francisco and the floating dry dock Arco also were nabbed in the last several weeks.

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, who has spent the past two years trying to wean the service off of fossil fuels, said promotion boards will consider an officer’s energy management when deciding whether to move him up. Furthermore, Battle E commendations will be based, in small part, on a command’s ability to sip fuel instead of guzzle.
