Olumpic Tourist class

I was wondering since the Olympic was upgraded a few times in her interiors, would the old third class areas be changed in the upgrade to Tourist class or were they the same? If so what did they look like? If not why did white star not change them? I would make sense to

There's no short answer for this. Suffice to say, portions of Olympic's second class spaces became updated for tourist third class in the 1927-28 refitting. This left her with first, second, tourist third and third class until the end of 1928 when second ans tourist third came together to form 'tourist.'

Of course areas became upgraded. There was a host of new third class public rooms for a start, while those under the poop that had been third class became tourist in 1928.

I hope this brief summary helps.

Best regards,

Mark.

Some of Olympic's changes were quite significant, like this cabin seen here pre-1928 refit (left) and post (right).

This is an E deck cabin, originally the 1st/2nd class cabin. Mark was is 'Tourist' class that this area of cabins was converted to?

Daniel.

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for posting these photos -- your quality research is always appreciated. I went straight to this from my e-mail and was pleasantly surprised at the wonderful photos.

If this was an E-deck 2nd/1st cabin pre-1928 then it might well have been made a Tourist class (or interchangable) cabin post-1928. A number of those on E-deck were. Out of interest, which number is it?

Best regards,

Mark.

Mark,

The cabin I'm playing with is E65 (or post 1921 D65). The one on the left is actually a photo of a more aft E deck cabin, which was smaller. However the fittings of the cabin are identical to what E65 would have been at the time (pre-1928 that is). All photos are in their untampered-with form on the CD. I don't know if you made a copy.

Regards,

Daniel.

PS. That cabin photo was taken on the same day as the 2nd class Smoke Room photo I mentioned on TRMA. April something 1933 or 32 (my memory is failing me

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for outlining that. I'll have to look at those plans again but from memory this cabin was converted to tourist. It certainly looks nicer than it was and I know much of Olympic's accommodation was greatly improved by 1928 and 1935.

I think the photo was taken on April 2nd 1931 -- you'll remember I outlined the details of the subsequent crossing on TRMA a few months back.

I didn't make a copy, but I might have printed one out.

Best regards,

Mark.
