Hello: I am a new registrant and would like some advice/direction if I may ask. I am looking for a list of the crew; specifically the pursers and assistance pursers of the Olympic and Britannic. I grew up a teenager in Vancouver, B.C. The old Englishman next door was an ex-sailor and had worked on ships from India to England during his career. I also remember looking at his sailor's "log" or whatever it is called, and it showed his service records. At any rate, he claimed to have been an assistant purser for White Star and was promoted to full purser shortly before the Titanic sailed. I would love to be able to verify this. Could someone give me some direction. His name was John Grey - unfortunately too common, I suppose and hard to confirm?? Thanks for any help. Mike

Hi Mike.
I found a John Grey sailing as a fireman on the Adriatic in 1922. He was 31 years of age at that time. The complete crew lists for some years and ships are included in the Ellis Island database and can be researched there. With some luck you might find more information about his career by searching for him there.

My great grandfather John Boyd was a 1st class saloon steward on Titanic. I am trying to see if he was ever a crew Member on Olympic or Britannic. Would anyone know if there is a way to see if he was ever a crew member on other White Star ships? thanks

I believe there's a chance he didn't serve on a White Star Liner before, as his previous ship was the SS New York of the American Line. Due to the National Coal Strike of 1912 a lot of ships were laid up in Southampton, these being the RMS Majestic (I), SS Philadelphia, SS St Louis, SS St Paul, SS Edinburgh Castle, SS Eider, SS Tagus, SS Orotava, SS Goth, RMS Kenilworth Castle, SS Beacon Grange SS Tambora, RMS Oceanic (II) and SS New York. A lot of the crew of the later two were assigned to the Titanic, as the Titanic was offered as an alternative for the passengers on the ships that were laid up.


Since the New York was owned by the American Line and the American Line was part of the International Mercantile Marine Company, of which the White Star Line was part of (J. Bruce Ismay was also the President of the IMMC since 1904, aiming to retire from that position in December 1912) it meant that a transfer would be possible of the crew of the New York and Philadelphia. This was likely the case for your great grandfather too, who was assigned to the first class dining saloon on D-deck during breakfast, luncheon and dining services, with potentially helping in other open spaces after dinner time.
