Olympic fittings auction

Discussion in 'Retirement Scrapping and Relics' started by Raymond Cowell, Jun 13, 2004.

  1. Thanks to Mr Cowell and his Auction at Haltwhistle, I have a 'new' door-knob for my bedroom, a 'new' hook on which to hang my dressing-gown, and a 'new' tile; set diagonally in the middle of the panel above the window. (The tile is in colours which perfectly complement the 'moss-green' walls!) With no margin for error, learning to restore the tile properly was a real challenge, but it resulted in success. All great fun it has been! Thanks to Ray. And to those who attended the Auction while I was 'laid up' - more down! - with a fractured shoulder.

  2. >Hi Donald, Glad you were happy with your items, Sorry you missed the auction and hope you are well now > > Regards Ray

I'm somewhat saddened to see items from the recent Haltwhistle auction up for sale on E Bay.I can understand the interest in Olympic fixtures being offered to those who were unable to attend the recent sale but to see pieces such as the decking "butchered" into cross sections just to make a quick buck devalues what is in effect historical artifacts.Simarly are the linoleum floor tiles which are being offered well and above what they went for on the day of sale.I would have thought those people who secured them on the day would have been real collectors who had a valued interest in Titanic/Olympic and not just out to make a killing on what the highest bidder would have offered.I realise the events which forced Raymond to sell the collection but it seems to me that a small majority of the buyers have just added a few noughts on the sale price and had no real interest in the history attached to them! I for one have had my floor tiles mounted in a box frame and the carving from the Grand Staircase take pride of place in my dining room...These pieces will remain in my keeping a long time hence!!!

    One word, appalled.
I looked at Ebay and have seen items purchased at the auction. I shake my head and hit the back-button.
I try to understand the individual motive for purchasing items when it is apparent the intention was to (understandably) pick the eyes out of that they could afford and later (try to) offset their monetary out-lay by selling off the less desirable items.
Either way, it’s their option to do what they choose. I respect that — I don’t understand it.
The abundant supply of Olympic fittings and timber items lately has likely had a deflating effect on the value of previously acquired items.
Short term (on the open market), the auction is likely a negative — not a positive.

Nigel Perkis, manager of the White Swan, told me that he had recently been asked if he wanted to buy any of the recently auctioned Olympic fittings, but that the asking prices were too high.

The original sale must have attracted a lot of ditto collectors. smile.gif

  9. Phil,

Will there also be realisations for items sold and any indication of where the items went to?

    Cheers,

The original sale must have attracted a lot of ditto collectors.
    I'll second that.

Iain. The catalogue contains some annotations of prices but comparatively few. These will all be visible in the copies on the site when they go up. I have contacted the original auctioneers but they have retained no records of the event. It might be possible to find out more through the newspapers. I haven't tried that route yet. One thing I'm considering is making it possible for some of the more interesting lots to state where they ended up and where they can be viewed today. Also the opportunity for people to login and say 'Hey, I own that!'

  11. Hi all-
Q while back when Mr. Cowell had the little contest for the 2 items he carved out of Olympic wood, I was the winner of the gavel. Here is a photo of me in the Lodge group I belong to "using" the gavel (Sorry if you cant actually see the gavel tho!!)

Here's a message for Raymond...Is the stripping out of the factory complete yet and were there any new treasures uncovered since you last posted on here? Look forward to your reply

  14. Hi Aidan,
All of the stripping out is done and the office block has been refurbished

I have left some panelling and some of the windows along with the Staircase these will not be offered for sale to leave some reminder of the Olympic in Haltwhistle

No other unexpected finds were made since my last posts other than what might lie behind the panels and stairs that are left

    Regards
    Raymond

just to add to the melee- it's a well known fact locally here (Paisley Scotland )- that a house in Kilbarchan Renfrewshire is believed to have a complete room panelled and furnished with items removed from "Olympic" when she was broken up at Inverkeithing- the local newspaper "Paisley Daily Express ran a story some years ago on it and the journalist at the time was a Derek Parker.- mibbe it's still there I don't know but things don't tend to change much here!

    Hi Andy,

Do you have anymore details on this house? I lived in glasgow when I was most interested in the Olympic's scrapping, I never heard of anything being so close by. It'd be ironic hearing about it now I don't live in Glasgow any more.

I don't think it's likely the panels are from Inverkeithing as Olympic was just a stripped down hulk when she was towed there from Jarrow where all her re-usable fittings had been included in the original dispersal auction in 1935.

in the list above under the heading bridge it sounds like they sold the whole bridge enclosure!:

20 The teak front enclosure, 27 ft. by 7 ft. high, fitted seven heavy plate-glass sliding windows, with chains and balance weights, the loose shutters with bolts and port glasses, and four ditto side-windows.

Does anyone know what happened to it?

I imagine anything unsold was probably burnt or smashed up!

  19. Jon,

Rumour has it that it is a garden shed somewhere in the UK.

    Paul,

I don't remember any specific count, but I remember someone expressed the opinion that a large amount of fittings were left unsold after the Olympic auction. I have not verified that as it has been four years since I went through some of those papers.

I realise you're busy, but I did send a reply to your e-mail. I also had another 'Gigantic' source to share with you in return for your generosity.

    Best wishes,

    Mark.

    Hi Mark,
That must be one big shed!
How much substance is there to the rumour?
surely someone would of cashed in on it by now? and sold it?
