Olympic to the Scrappers

How much attention was Olympic's voyage to the scrappers given? In the few photos I have seen of her final departure from Southampton, I see few people watching her. Was her demise unnoticed when compared to Mauretania?

The Olympic's final voyage was covered extensively. The local papers in North East England gave blanket covereage to her arrival and preparations for her dispersal auction. She was seen as something of saviour as she was bringing £100,000 and 18 months of work to an area hit very badly by the great depression. The London Times even had an article when the hulk was towed from North-East England to Scotland in 1937 for demolition of the keel. The Olympic was regarded as a very famous ship, being the largest British ship built until the Queen Mary came along (which was fitting out at Clydebank, Scotland when the Olympic met her end).

However, from looking at these articles, the ship that was overlooked and ignored was undoubtedly the Titanic. Of the many newspapers articles about the Olympic's scrapping I have read, not one makes a single reference to the fact the Olympic was the Titanic's sister ship. I suppose the deaths of 1500 people was something a bit too serious to be mentioned in passing in the 1930s.

Good point. I think Olympic was thought of as a famous liner, not the sistership of the Titanic back then. Nowadays many tend to think of her as Titanic's sister first and as a major liner second.

Hi!

That's unfortunate, I've seen about five! They don't go into much detail on Titanic, though; you're quite right.

Certainly the coverage was massive. Enough articles to fill a block of papers 3 1/2 inches thick!

BTW, Stuart, did you get my last e-mail reply?

Best regards,

Mark.

Hi Mark,

Which papers did mention that Olympic was related to Titanic in 1935? The papers I looked at were the London times, the daily Express and Daily Record. I also looked at the local papers on Tyneside.

Just wondering!

Stuart

Hi Stuart,

The papers ranged from August to September-October 1935, including the Daily Mail, the various local Tyneside papers, the London Times, etc. One recalled Olympic and Titanic in spring 1912 as among the wonders of the world. I could get the exact issues but at the moment I'm in a hurry and as I've said my copies are inches thick.

Best regards,

Mark.
