Pearl Harbor merging with Hickam AFB
quote:

HONOLULU – Most Americans have heard of the naval base at Pearl Harbor. Some are also aware of the air base next door called Hickam, where Japanese planes destroyed U.S. bombers during the 1941 aerial attack.

On Sunday, the two historic sites will cease to be separate bases, merging into Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

Pilot who dismissed early Pearl warnings dies
quote:

SAN DIEGO – Hawaii-based pilot Kermit Tyler thought the big blip on the radar screen Dec. 7, 1941, was a fleet of U.S. B-17 bombers due in from the mainland, so he replied “don’t worry about it”￾ when told of the approaching mass that turned out to be the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

Tyler, who was ultimately cleared of wrongdoing, has died at age 96, content he did all he could that morning.

DNA from letters helps ID Pearl Harbor sailor
quote:

Before he died at Pearl Harbor, less than a month after turning 18, Gerald Lehman sent letters home to Michigan that his mother came to treasure.

In them, the teen talked about going through Navy training in Great Lakes, Ill. – falling out of his sleeping hammock once – and how much he liked his new woolen uniform.

In graceful penmanship, he asked about the family dog, Duke; and waiting to ship out from California on the battleship USS Oklahoma.
