'Submarine Killer' helped fire first shots at Pearl Harbor

Stories of battles were buzzing about the 737 jet carrying 103 World War II veterans home to central Wisconsin on Monday night after their Never Forgotten Honor Flight to see the Washington, D.C., war monuments.

But the tale told by Will Lehner, 89, of Stevens Point was of a little-known episode in WWII history about a submarine and Pearl Harbor. On Monday, it earned him the nickname "Submarine Killer."

Pearl Harbor Sailors Honor Veterans

HONOLULU (NNS) -- Sailors stationed in Hawaii volunteered to clean up the Navy Veteran's Cemetery at the Oahu Cemetery in Honolulu Nov. 9.

More than forty volunteers from the Pearl Harbor-based surface ships USS Chafee (DDG 90), USS Russell (DDG 59), USS Paul Hamilton (DDG 60), USS Port Royal (CG 73), USS Lake Erie (CG 70), and from Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific participated in the event.

PEARL HARBOR (NNS) -- Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard successfully undocked USS Chicago (SSN 721) from its scheduled engineered refueling overhaul Oct. 27, six weeks ahead of schedule.

The undocking supports fleet operational requirements by delivering submarines from maintenance and modernization activities for fleet tasking.

PEARL HARBOR (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Hawaii wrapped up construction for a new drive-in submarine magnetic silencing facility (MSF) Dec. 31, 2010, at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam's Beckoning Point.

NAVFAC Hawaii administered the complex project that involved different Navy commands and coordinated the construction of the new facility with Honolulu-based Watts-Healy Tibbitts Joint Venture.

PEARL HARBOR (NNS) -- Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PHNSY&IMF) completed emergent repair work on the guided-missile frigate USS Reuben James (FFG 57), enabling ship to meet a Feb. 1 deployment to the Western Pacific.

The shipyard received an urgent request Jan. 29 for pump and valve repair support required in order for the ship to deploy.
