If everything held together, then they could even manage it until the coal ran out.~ Not a possibility. the engines wered started again after the ship struck the berg. the exact time they were on and the reason is unknown, estimates range from 10 to minutes, w/ various reasons for why, while moving forward though the flooding rate of the breached compartments increased. as pointed out earlier turning back and finding the berg or any berg for would be very difficult. using the berg as support to keep the bow from dipping in would be very dangerous and I don't think any captain or officer would try this as it would cause severe damage to the ship's double bottom causing further damage.
