I must confess to being somewhat surprised to see this image posted in this thread.
As the winning bidder on the recent ebay auction for the Britannic photo, an auction which I was delighted to win (and which I paid a very very high price for), I spoke to the original owner of my own photo. He states that to the best of his knowledge the photo is unique, and it is indeed a small, yellowing 'snap' photograph with some unique handwriting on the back. He also states that the picture above is an exact match, right down to the sea's waves.
As a result of this information, it brings to light a disturbing question as to the above photo's authenticity, and I wonder if you could help me Miles? I've tried to find the other auction where the image you have posted here is being sold, on ebay, without success. Both myself and the original owner would appreciate it if you could post a specific url so that we might trace the other auction.
It would seem very unlikely that two identical photographs could appear on ebay in the space of a fortnight, particularly since mine is an apparently unique picture rather than a mass-produced postcard, and at the moment it looks -- sadly -- as if another seller out there has taken it upon themselves to take the scan from the original auction and sell it as a postcard. I very much hope that there is another explanation, but the original owner is prepared to instigate legal action for any violation of copyright.
I would consider it advisable to remove the image from this thread, since I know that you would not want to propagate a copyright violation -- however inadvertently.
