May I just take a moment to recall those Engineers and Other Engine Room Staff Who were lost.
Some 35 Engineers ALL lost, they must have all stayed below right to the end.
This link relates the feelings of the day.
The actions of these men that night was not only heroic, but in many ways highlights the best part of human nature, if there is such a thing.
I often, when thinking on Titanic, wonder what it must have been like for those men, knowing they were doomed, working until the moment Titanic's lights went out... beyond the point that most of the officers on deck had either been forced to, or purposefully abandoned their posts--no shame on them at all for there was truly no more they could do.
The engineering staff have been much on my mind this weekend. I can’t imagine what it must have been like for them near the end, with the all of the ship forward of them underwater, the ship at a terrifying angle, obviously sinking and sounding like it was coming apart at the seems. We call so many people hero's today!
I have also been sparing a thought for the Guarantee Group as well who must have been with the engineers.
