RMS Titanic and James Cameron

Joshua McCracken

When James Cameron's film 'Titanic' came out in 1997, it took me a month to finally check it out. To be honest, I didn't go to see the film so much as I went to see the spectacular underwater footage that Cameron took of the wreck. From what I understand, today RMS Titanic, Inc. is on the brink of bankruptcy, and I thought that I would throw an interesting little idea I had out here: what if salvor-in-possession status were given to Cameron? After all, he obviously has a real interest in exploring the wreck, and as the case of the Central America wreck in 1986 proves, photographs hold the weight of physical salvage in U.S. courts.
