The core of the 600-plus-strong regiment has spent six months in Helmand on Operation Herrick 14, providing medical aid, maintaining vehicles and running combat logistic patrols - crucial resupply convoys.

Staff from across Portsmouth Naval Base turned out in force to bid farewell to their outgoing commander today — Commodore Rob Thompson — as he was driven out of the establishment for the last time.

Hundreds of service and civilian personnel lined the route as Cdre Thompson was chauffeured out in a six-tonne Army cargo vehicle from Marchwood military port at Southampton which also comes under his command.

Royal Marines have completed their latest tour-of-duty in Afghanistan, formally handing over responsibility for the British mission in Helmand to 20 Armoured Brigade.

The Globe and Laurel was lowered at Task Force Helmand HQ in Lashkar Gah and the 'iron fist' of the Army unit raised in its place as the soldiers' commander praised 3 Commando Brigade for making "real and lasting progress" over the past six months.
