Searching for Olympic Titanic Mattress ad

Hi All,was wondering if someone would know where I can find an ad concerning the mattress on Olympic and Titanic. I saw an example of this in The Titanic Commutator Vol. 27 Num. 162, 2003, on page 89 there is an ad for the marshall mattresses on Olympic and Titanic, does anyone know what journal this ad comes from and where could I find one. Thanks Rene

Hi Rene,

One book which may help you out (and I've found VERY informative) is "Titanic - From Rare Historical Reports" by Peter Boyd-Smith. Not only does it contain lots of wonderful newspaper photographs and articles about the catastrophe it also contains some of the advertisements pertaining to the ship or the White Star Line.

On page 77 of this book there is a large ad proclaiming:

HOSKINS & SEWELL, Ltd.
Manufacturers and patentees of all classes of
of metallic ships berths and portable wood cabins, etc.

T. S. S. OLYMPIC
The whole of the contract for
THE BRASSCOT BERTHS for the
EMPIRE, ADAMS & SHERATON CABINES DE LUXE.
the METALLIC BERTHS and MATTRESSES for the
1sr, 2nd and 3rd Class and crews accomodation,
including the 3rd class PATENT PORTABLE CABINS
in the above vessel, have been executed by us
and we have a repeat order on hand for the
T. S. S. TITANIC

And this is just one of the ads in this excellent book.

Hope this is of some help.

Best regards,
Cook

Pat,

That ad I can definitely say was in the Shipbuilder, but I can't recall seeing the mattress ad in the shipbuilder. I don't have the special Shipbuilder, and there are no mattress ads in the photocopies I made of that Shipbuilder.

Daniel.

HI Daniel,

Always a treat to hear from you, sir.

I was just wondering that, while the above ad for Hoskins & Sewell talks about having an order for Titanic, did they, in fact, supply the mattresses when all was said and done? I mean it DOES follow that if they supplied the Olympic they'd take care of her sister as well. Still, as the ad states, it's not yet a fait accompli.

Best regards, O M

Rene,

The original ad can be found in the original Shipbuilder number for Olympic and Titanic, not the reprinted version. It was also reproduced in Mark Warren's Shipbuilder 2-volume set.

I thought I remembered it from somewhere. Interesting the way each of those sprngs is shown to be enclosed. IIRC, there's a company out there right now that's offering something similar. Air spring or something like that. You might hace seen the adverts where some kid is jumping up and down on the thing, but a glass of wine remains unspilled.

I wonder if the company who makes this thing knows the basic idea is close to a century old?
