Sometimes life hands us the chance to do it right the second time around. Rarely does it happen as perfectly as this, however.

On March 21, 1959, the freighter Comandante Lyra was on fire in extremely rough weather off the coast of Brazil. Her distress call was received and answered by the MV Inga Bastian. The Bastian saved the 56-man crew, despite the adverse conditions.

Now recall, if you've seen it, the scene in the movie Das Boot where K-L Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock and the U-96 abandon the crew of the burning tanker.

Lehmann-Willenbrock was the captain of the Inga Bastian He later said he felt that maybe he'd atoned to some extent for the crew he couldn't save.
