Smoking room panel

have a look at the christie's site and find the sale no 5758 held 12th april under auction calender . go to lot 112 - it appears to be a rare survivor. I had the bad luck to underbid but have asked to be put in contact with the purchaser so i can ask if there are any markings on the reverse.

Adam,

I checked it out, and the panel and its inlay of mother-of-pearl, matches exactly those seen on photos of Olympic's Smoking Room. As far as I can see, the auction makes no mention of the Olympic or Titanic. I wonder how likely it is for two unrelated panels to be identical.

Daniel.

Daniel.

I did ask about any marks on the back but recieved no reply before the sale . I took the chance that it was very unlikely that the panel could have come from anywhere else but was the underbidder anyway. I did wonder if it could have been an extra or rejected panel that was never fitted.

Adam,

The Smoking Room was a large room, and we do know of one house somewhere in England that has paneling from Olympic's Smoke Room installed in it. However that paneling would account for only a fraction of the room. There is a good chance that various other people had other sections of the room.

This particular small panel may not have any markings, especially considering that nothing of its relation to Olympic/Titanic is mentioned. This would have been part of a much larger panel which probably had the markings, but not this small panel.

Here's a picture of it. This would have been one of 4 such panels in the Smoking Room. I just looked at the auction today, and there is no photo on the lot anymore ... maybe its just my computer.

PS. The image shows the same panel from the Olympic, but taken 33 years appart. The 1st photo had very good lighting, which is why the detail is so bright.

Daniel,

I think they remove the photo's a day or two after the sale . I could try and scan the catalogue photo if you want and send it to you - I'm not sure if it would be ok to post it here or would it breach copyright law?

Regards

Adam
