Hello
I recently purchased these photo's of the Olympic.I understand the larger ones were prob taken in the 1920's. They should come in the post soon so I will try and post some better images. The seller said he could read all the names of the tugs so I imagine the images would be clearer in person.

Seller said in discrption:

>>These real photo pcs were in a box that I bought at an estate sale -The first photo when I look through a maginify glass i can see the name printed "Olympic" -the tugboat to the right name is I think-Vicrow's Towing and with the tugboat to the left coming at you is J.M. Cald---the boat to the extreme right foreground last Letters is YORK. I dont' know if this is NY Harbor- All three are in excellent condition. Anyone with more info re the PCs please email me<<

The 2 pictures below were not from the same seller. Only cost £21. Nice to get an Olympic picture for that price. Maybe not the best 2 shots of the Olympic but just the sort of thing I look for.

Miles,

The latest two images are not coming up, but as for the 1st 3 you posted, they look like photos taken of the Olympic arriving in NY harbour on her maiden voyage! How on earth, and where on earth you manage to find these is incredible!

Daniel.

Hello Daniel

The pictures came today. I thought they could be maiden voyage pictures also. But my friend Eric whom I send these scans to thought they were from the 1920's (something to do with the White Star Line dock she is entering) however they can't be because the life boat arrangement is certainly of the 1911 and 1912 period. From seeing them in person I think they are the best in my collection. The last 2 look like they are a bit out of focus but this is not the case. They are very sharp and the detail on all 3 is superb. I wonder if they become more sort after if they are maiden voyage photo's ? I paid about £175 for the 3. This is the normal asking price for Olympic pictures, however if they are taken on her first arrival in New York I wonder if that may push there worth up? Maybe not. Anyway you would have to see the photo’s in hand in order to appreciate how good they are in regard to the detail that does not come across in the scan’s, for example people lining the deck below the life boat’s and on the pier. I will try and get a better scan up. Anyone know of any decent free web site’s for uploading images. Also if anyone can give me any information if these are maiden voyage pictures or when they were taken I’d be very grateful.

Thanks

Miles,

You could probably compare your photos to known maiden voyage arrival photos. As you know some of the fresh paint washed off the bow, you can check and see if the patterns are consistent between your photos and those of known maiden voyage photos.

What you paid for them is a reasonable or expected asking price for these sort of photos, however I would think that being maiden voyage photos they may be worth a little bit bit more ... perhaps if you sell them to the right person or in the right place.

Regards,

Daniel.

Miles - Splendid photos! Harbour entry; entry to pier. Tug coming directly at us looks like it might be one of Moran's; looking so black due to red wheelhouse and black stack. Enthusiasm rewarded - once again! Don

Miles - Quite the collection! Remarkable. Among others, the 'Bon Voyage' and 'Welcome' photographs with enthusiastic crowds in the foreground would be sought-after by any photo-agency. What an archive! In New York, the legendary Michael Moran stood in his tower with his telescope, watching out for 'Olympic'. When he spotted her, he took up his megaphone and shouted down to his men. Here (page 3, centre left) with its big 'M' proudly displayed - is one of his famous fleet of tugboats drawn up alongside. Congrats to you! Don

Hi

Thanks. Was advised to take the photo's off line by a friend who said it was not wise. He said it could render the images not as useful for future projects. So although I glad you liked the site I hope not to many people saw it or saved any images :-))

Many thanks

I suppose it does not matter with the scans from ebay being on here as the sharpness and detail don't come out at all in these pictures.

Hi Miles,
I think you misunderstood me. What I meant was IF I recalled correctly the photographs I sold of Olympic the morning of her maiden arrival had her dressed in flags. I could easily be wrong. I don't doubt those are early photographs. The White Star shed I mentioned was in reference to another photograph of yours - as far as date the Chelsea Piers complex was completed in 1910. Lusitania was first in on Sept. 13th, 1907, and Oceanic "opened" her officially in 1910. I believe Olympic docked at Pier 59 of the Cheslea complex on the morning of her maiden arrival.

Best,
Eric Longo

i believe my collection of Olympic Photos far exceeds those posted here. i have ones all pretty much from the date of launch of the Olympic including the collission with the Hawke
