In what ways is the SS Normandie highly advanced by today's standards even, because the ship was referred to as 50 years ahead of its time and I have heard that it still is in a number of ways today.

One of the things that made her so advanced was the addition of a wave breaker on the bow. The waves would hit the Normandie's bow and the breaker would deflect the water back into the ocean. This was intended to give the bridge better visibility during a storm without having the water constantly hitting the windows and obstructing their view. You can see it behind the man in the foreground.

She was also advanced by the fact that her funnel intakes did not go straight up through the ship. Instead the intakes would split in 2 in the middle of the ship, then meet up again at the top. This allowed the Normandie to possess public rooms on a scale the world have never seen before.

This is the normal funnel of a liner like the Titanic, the vent is straight up.

This is the funnel on the Normandie. It is split to allow massive public rooms in the center of the ship.
