This is considered a children's book, which is probably why you found it elusive. It's about a young apprentice carpenter who works on the building of the ship and also on the voyage.
Although it's called a children's book, it's really more for young adults, but good reading for anyone. I got it on interlibrary loan from Dayton & Montgomery County Public Library, Dayton, Ohio.
