The "Astor baby" John Jacob Astor VI

Darren,
Re: your question about Astor descendant's interest in Titanic--though technically not an Astor, one of Madeleine's grandsons by William K. Dick was invited to attend the SC dinner we had in January and although he was interested, previous plans prevented him from coming. Maybe next time!

Hello All~

I guess this thread is as good as any to ask about Astor's daughter, Amelia. I have come across information about her Mother- Ava- having custody of her and moving to Paris after the divorce in 1909. Now, didn't Amelia arrive to the U.S. for her Father's funeral (I don't think Ava traveled with her-?)? Last I know Amelia married a Polish Count in the 1920's, after that I'm afraid she is obscured to me.
I find it piognant that this girl not only had to go through the rendering of her family, but then the death of her Father, in a most public, scrutinized fashion, all by the time she was only about 12 years old. I wonder if she and her step-mother, Madeliene, ever had some kind of relationship; if only a correspodence- since both their young lives were so affected by not only tragedy, but also gossip and controversy.

Yours~
Kris

I would imagine that Ava probably wouldn't have allowed Amelia to write to Madeline. I may be wrong, but this seems like the most likely scenario to me.

Kris,
The daughter's name was Ava Alice Muriel Astor and she married and divorced four times and had children by three husbands. I don't know much about her contact with Madeleine but I expect it would have been negligible in later years. She died in New York in 1956 as Ava Alice Muriel Pleydell-Bouverie.

Regards,
Phil

Phillip-
Thank you for the clarification of the name, I do not know how I got "Amelia"...
I really never thought much of a relationship, if any, was developed between the two, it seems both of their lives became, well, hectic after 1912. Still- if one doesn't ask...

Thank you again-
Kris

I know this thread is a little stale, but I just discovered it so it's fresh to me!

Alice Astor was once married to Prince Serge Obolensky of Russia whose first wife, Catherine Yourievsky, was a daughter of Tsar Alexander II. Obolensky, one of many members of the Russian nobility impoverished by the Revolution, became a popular member of Cafe Society after his marriage to Alice Astor. They had two children. Later, after they divorced, Obolensky had a successful career in hotel management, managing, among other properties Colonel Astor's St. Regis in New York.

His autobiography, One Man in His Time, contains lots of Astor references and would be a great read for anyone interested in that family and that era.

Now a question. Does anyone know a descendant of J.J. by the name of Jackie Astor? My parents met this attractive woman in about 1978 on a QE2 crossing. They were introduced by the Chief Engineer who was hosting a party in his cabin. Of course my parents had their picture made with her for my benefit!

Hi Doug,
Jackie Astor (Jacqueline Drexel) is the daughter of John Astor the Titanic baby, and granddaughter of J.J. and Madeleine. She lives in New York.

I started this thread because there is so little information on J.J. Astor V even though he is technically a Posthumous Titanic Survivor. Sure he wasn't born yet and so wasn't a fare paying passenger but he was on the Ship. The Titanic Sinking also had an effect on him. No Biography on him. No I don't want to do it. I know next to nothing about him but I've always been curious about him and his life since I read that Madeleine Astor was pregnant and expecting only to find herself alone and pregnant though I'm sure she wasn't that alone. Anyways I thought I'd just thought I'd start this thread for folks to share info on him.

Hi George, actually, J.J. Astor's youngest son is named J.J. Astor VI. There was another J.J. Astor born in England (Baron of Hever) between him and his father, so this "in the womb" Titanic survivor is the sixth man in the family to bear the name.

But yes, I agree! There should be a biography here about John Jacob Astor VI.

Now you tell me. Darn!

Could A Moderator please Help! fix the topic heading to read the VI instead of the V. Plus fix my first post in this topic. Thanks Geo.

[Moderator's Note: The thread title has been corrected, but the first message in the thread has not, since that would render the second message meaningless. MAB]

Mark, that's quite alright. If George doesn't mind, you may remove my post #728, as well as this post I am writing now in order for everything to be smooth and correct. I will post something else once everything is correct.

I don't mind at all. Thank you Jason. In fact Mark, you can remove my posts except for the first one as well and just correct the first Post. I'd appreciate it. Thanks again Geo.
