Washington DC -- Frank Braynard, the nation's leading maritime historian, has agreed to allow the SS United States Foundation to reprint his highly sought after book The Big Ship for the 50th Anniversary celebration of the storied ocean liner's 1952 record breaking Maiden Voyage--a record that no ship of the United States class has ever defeated (see www.ssunitedstates.org for details).

The 50th Anniversary Book, to be published by MT Publishing, will be co-authored by Robert Hudson Westover. Mr. Westover's contribution to the book is a chronicle he has written of what has happened to the SS United States since 1982 (the year The Big Ship was published) and includes an introduction.
The forward has been written by Susan Gibbs, granddaughter of the speed champion's designer and our nation's greatest Naval Architect, William Francis Gibbs.

Bill DeBennetto, founder of the SS United States Preservation Society, has provided an extensive technical appendix that--along with the manuscript by Mr. Braynard and Mr. Westover--will make the 50th Anniversary edition of The Big Ship the most comprehensive history of the SS United States ever published.

There will also be a section for stories of those who crossed on the Big U, among the contributors to this section is Mrs. Laura Dunn, the daughter of General Franklin, President of United States Lines (next to Mr. Gibbs, General Franklin was the man most responsible for the construction of the SS United States).

The unveiling of the book's cover, along with the unveiling of the Big U's 50th Anniversary poster--to be designed by SSUSF's Addy Award winning president, Matt Smith--will take place on board the RMS Queen Mary during the Grand Reception in the Queen's Lounge (salon) this July 7th!

To confirm your attendance at the 50th Anniversary event on board the RMS Queen Mary please call 703-625-3037 or email the Foundation at [email protected] .
