Trent,
What Patty wrote.
And here’s my run of suggestions too. I’m sure there’ll be many more from others to follow.
==============================
-The biography on the Cardeza's by Linda Greaves
I think I’ll let someone else answer this one: I thought it was articles rather than a book but would like to know more.
-Discretions and Indescretions by
Lady Duff Gordon
Get in the queue!
It’s long out of print so you’ll need to keep an eye out for this one through used book networks such as bookfinder.com or addall.com/used. It’s a smaller network, but ABEbooks.com has a ‘saved want search’ function that provides email notification when there’s a copy of one of your wanted books available. You could also save it as a ‘wanted search’ on eBay, again this has email notification.
-Echoes in the Night by Frankie Goldsmith
As per Patty’s suggestions, can be purchased through the THS. Turns up on eBay/used book networks very rarely.
-The Man Who Sank the Titanic? by Gary Cooper
The 1998 printing still seems to be readily available in the UK. Can be ordered through most bookshops — see amazon.co.uk (use the link from ET and help support the site) or whsmith.co.uk for two examples.
-A Hymn for Eternity: the Story of Wallace Hartley by Yvonne Carroll
Currently in print and readily available — even here! Listed by Amazon.com. Amazon.co.uk, etc. Get the publishing details from Mike Tennaro’s site (
www.titanicbooksite.com) and see if your library will buy it on the grounds that it’s a recent release and likely to be of broader interest to a lot of lay readers who were touched by Hartley’s portrayal in Cameron’s film. (Or at least that’s an argument I’ve tried using locally.) If this isn’t an option and you want to buy a copy of your own, take the details to your local independent bookseller and see if they’ll do a special order if they don’t have it in stock.
-Home from the Sea by
Captain Rostron
Long out of print. See comments on 'Lucile’s' book, as above.
-I'm Going to See What Has Happened by Gerald Nummi and Janet White
Self-published paper (comb binding) rather than book, the THS used to have copies but don’t seem to have any more. I suspect this is another case of tracking copies through the used book network and online auctions.
-I am not sure if this is a book but, Titanic Passenger Miss Kate Buss of Sittingbourne by Brian Ticehurst
It’s a ‘paper’ rather than a book. I got mine from whsmith.co.uk a few years back, but it’s still showing up as available there and through Amazon.co.uk (see comment on supporting ET above). Brian Ticehurst has published a number of excellent ‘occasional papers’, but they don’t seem to be available outside the UK.
-Ohh and one book about
Olympic by Simon Mills.
The Old Reliable is available through Amazon.com, the THS, and the UK bookshops listed above.
==============================
For more suggestions on new and used bookshops to try, you could see Mike Tennaro’s excellent run of selections (see
www.titanicbooksite.com). I have suggestions on my site too, but it’s more geared to the Australian enthusiast battling the tyranny of distance.
Most of the above involve credit cards (ie dealing with UK bookshops) and parting with large sums of money (Rostron, Lady Duff Gordon). If that’s just not an option, you could use Mike T’s site to get all the of the publishing details and then approach your library to see if they would buy some of the more recent works (such as Yvonne Carroll’s book, perhaps). If it’s practicable, you may be able to attend some of the Titanic meets and trade/buy from other collectors.
Ok, who’s next?
