Tips on hard to find biographies

Does anyone have any tips on how to find the following book? I have had trouble even finding a library that carries them in my area. They are:

-The biography on the Cardeza's by Linda Greaves.
-Discretions and Indescretions by Lady Duff Gordon
-Echoes in the Night by Frankie Goldsmith
-The Man Who Sank the Titanic? by Gary Cooper
-A Hymn for Eternity: the Story of Wallace Hartley by Yvonne Carroll
-Home from the Sea by Captain Rostron
-I'm Going to See What Has Happened by Gerald Nummi and Janet White

-I am not sure if this is a book but, Titanic Passenger Miss Kate Buss of Sittingbourne by Brian Ticehurst

-Ohh and one book about Olympic by Simon Mills.

Any help on any one book would be great. Sorry there are so many. I typed a lot in hopes that someone will have any information on the books. Thanks.

Trent, Discretions and Indescretions by Lady Duff
Gordon, is a very scarce book to obtain. It
took me 3 years, but finally on Ebay, they had
one..but it will be high dollar, depending on
what you are willing to pay. The Echoes in the
Night by Frank Goldsmith, you can buy the paperback version, if you go to titanichistoricalsociety.org & titanic1.org, they have a shop you can
purchase books from. abebooks.com has a couple
of Rostron's , and alibris.com, has netted
me some pretty good fines (scarce books ) as
well as current ones. My best finds, with the
price I want, have been at abebooks.com and
sometimes ebay. Patty

Trent, forgot to tell you, Titanic Passenger
Miss Kate Buss is on Ebay now, not sure when the
auction ends. The Simon Mills book, you can
probably find at the web sites, I previously
gave you. www.UsedBookSearch.co.uk is another
web site, that searches millions of books. Good
luck , Patty

Trent,

And here’s my run of suggestions too. I’m sure there’ll be many more from others to follow.

==============================

-The biography on the Cardeza's by Linda Greaves

I think I’ll let someone else answer this one: I thought it was articles rather than a book but would like to know more.

-Discretions and Indescretions by Lady Duff Gordon

Get in the queue! ;) It’s long out of print so you’ll need to keep an eye out for this one through used book networks such as bookfinder.com or addall.com/used. It’s a smaller network, but ABEbooks.com has a ‘saved want search’ function that provides email notification when there’s a copy of one of your wanted books available. You could also save it as a ‘wanted search’ on eBay, again this has email notification.

-Echoes in the Night by Frankie Goldsmith

As per Patty’s suggestions, can be purchased through the THS. Turns up on eBay/used book networks very rarely.

-The Man Who Sank the Titanic? by Gary Cooper

The 1998 printing still seems to be readily available in the UK. Can be ordered through most bookshops — see amazon.co.uk (use the link from ET and help support the site) or whsmith.co.uk for two examples.

-A Hymn for Eternity: the Story of Wallace Hartley by Yvonne Carroll

Currently in print and readily available — even here! Listed by Amazon.com. Amazon.co.uk, etc. Get the publishing details from Mike Tennaro’s site (www.titanicbooksite.com) and see if your library will buy it on the grounds that it’s a recent release and likely to be of broader interest to a lot of lay readers who were touched by Hartley’s portrayal in Cameron’s film. (Or at least that’s an argument I’ve tried using locally.) If this isn’t an option and you want to buy a copy of your own, take the details to your local independent bookseller and see if they’ll do a special order if they don’t have it in stock.

-Home from the Sea by Captain Rostron

Long out of print. See comments on 'Lucile’s' book, as above.

-I'm Going to See What Has Happened by Gerald Nummi and Janet White

Self-published paper (comb binding) rather than book, the THS used to have copies but don’t seem to have any more. I suspect this is another case of tracking copies through the used book network and online auctions.

-I am not sure if this is a book but, Titanic Passenger Miss Kate Buss of Sittingbourne by Brian Ticehurst

It’s a ‘paper’ rather than a book. I got mine from whsmith.co.uk a few years back, but it’s still showing up as available there and through Amazon.co.uk (see comment on supporting ET above). Brian Ticehurst has published a number of excellent ‘occasional papers’, but they don’t seem to be available outside the UK.

-Ohh and one book about Olympic by Simon Mills.

The Old Reliable is available through Amazon.com, the THS, and the UK bookshops listed above.

==============================

For more suggestions on new and used bookshops to try, you could see Mike Tennaro’s excellent run of selections (see www.titanicbooksite.com). I have suggestions on my site too, but it’s more geared to the Australian enthusiast battling the tyranny of distance.

Most of the above involve credit cards (ie dealing with UK bookshops) and parting with large sums of money (Rostron, Lady Duff Gordon). If that’s just not an option, you could use Mike T’s site to get all the of the publishing details and then approach your library to see if they would buy some of the more recent works (such as Yvonne Carroll’s book, perhaps). If it’s practicable, you may be able to attend some of the Titanic meets and trade/buy from other collectors.

Ok, who’s next?

Thank you so much Patty and Fiona. With that list I shall be busy tracking down books for some time.

Patty I will have to check out ebay, see if I can get it!

I figured Discretion and Rostrons book would be rather expensive, I will have to wait till I get a job to venture out for those ones.

Guess I will start hitting up THS and sweet talking some librarians! Thank you so much for all your help! I am off to look....

TITANIC passenger Miss Kate Buss

No. for the book by Brian Ticehurst- "Miss Kate
Buss" . There is one day left for the auction to close. Patty

some silly fool is trying to sell a copy of Nummi's I'm Going to See What Has Happened for $194.91 (!!!!!!) on Amazon.com. needless to say, that is just a tad overpriced, scarce or not. where, oh where do these people come up with these prices?!?

all the best, Michael (TheManInBlack) T

I've seen the Olympic (Simon Mills) book on ebay often enough, I got my copy from the THS a few years ago (signed by Mills as well).

What is "I'm Going to See What Has Happened" about, who's auto/biography is it?

I'm Going to See What Has Happened contains Third class Finnish passenger Elin Hakkarainen’s experiences in the Titanic disaster. It also includes accounts by Laina Heikkinen & Anna Sofia Turja.

It's in English with photocopies of newspaper articles and documents in Finnish and Russian.

all the best, Michael (TheManInBlack) T

Thank you all for the help. With the help of Mary Ann Whitley I got "I'm Going to See What Has Happened" All that I have to do is send the money in. The one on amazon was a tad bit too much for my taste lol $194!!! It looks like I am going to have to get in touch with THS to get a few of these books. Thanks again.

I got word of it too late but an antique shop in Canada had for sale an AUTOGRAPHED British first edition of "Discretions and Indiscretions" complete with dust jacket and 2 pasted-in press cuttings, one of a review of the book and the other an interview with Lucy Duff Gordon. This went for quite a sum - $600!

The US edition is hard to find with its jacket but the UK edition is almost impossible to find in its cover. LDG was retired from her public career by 1932, the year of her book's release. Therefore, since there was no promotional tour or lectures that accompanied the publication of her memoirs, autographed copies of the book are extremely rare.

Wow, Randy, it would have been great to be able
to obtain a signed copy of "Discretions and Indiscretions" Especially with the UK edition
and dust jacket !! I hate the ones "that get
away".

I finally got an autographed copy of the British
version of Rostron's "Home from the Sea", but
I almost had to get a 2nd mortgage to pay for it
(Just kidding). But to me, it is worth having.

Your intense interest in Lady Duff Gordon, is
the same I feel about Rostron. I understand, the
fascination in researching someone you do have
that extra interest in. Patty
