The so called "haze" was something that Lookout Fleet mentioned later and was likely referring to the fact that he was not able to discern the horizon as clearly as he expected even though the night was very clear and starlit. But it was also a moonless night and very dark with a flat calm sea that made spotting icebergs difficult. Although the subject of the haze has been discussed several times in the past including a thread of its own, it is very doubtful if there really was a haze as such. The aforementioned flat calm conditions and the darkness limited the visual acuity of the lookouts and Murdoch and that, combined with the Titanic's speed, was the reason that they were unable to take effective evasive action in time.I know that the movies omitted the haze to make the scene more visible
