Titanic Honor and Glory

Ah, for goodness sake everyone!

A few things:

1) Cut 'em some slack for crying out loud! The pandemic we're going through has obviously had an effect on everything we're going through right now, and it's no doubt affect the Titanic HG team as well.

2) Just be patient with them! The project will be done WHEN it's done.

3) I see the THG project as art; look at this video clip between 0:37 and 0:43 and you'll see why I'm annoyed with all the doubters out there.

0:37 to 0:39; those asking when the project will be done.

0:40 to 0:43; those willing to wait until the project is fully finished.

No more criticisms please!
No, saying no more criticism is stupid. If it weren't for the people being critical of this project, then the team would just keep on doing the same crap they've been doing. Telling them how amazing they are over and over again when they do nothing is the problem with the project, but now that criticism has started to get larger and larger the team has decided they want to change, which is good. We'll see if anything actually changes, but it's a step in the right direction.

Stop telling people to be patient, and cut them some slack. We've done that, now is the time to be critical of them, and stop praising them for everything they say.

Even moreso than the pandemic, there hasn't been much in the way of updates to the game as a game since Demo 3, which was... 2017, I think? Since then they've done a bunch of side projects, such as modelling 1912 Southampton, The stuff related to the Britannic, the tangent where they instead invested resources into modelling the SS Atlantic, (which barely has any significant connection to the Titanic aside from both being WSL,) there were reports of them wanting to do something Lusitania related...

The most recent thing relevant to THG they've posted was the updated Final Plunge, and that's something they've been sitting on for a while (and didn't really update anything from the 2016 animation aside from adding silhouettes to represent passengers and making the lighting a bit darker.) Now, I don't really follow them elsewhere, but so far as I can tell, they've been mostly silent on their other social media platforms too.

There's "Be patient," and, "Hey, it's been six months since we've heard anything at all, and years since you've made an update to the actual game. What's going on?"

I also think we should cut Matt Dewinkleer and Kyle Hudak some slack, as they're the only ones who are spending time (occasionally) with the community on Discord, Facebook, reddit, etc.
Tom, on the other hand, has acted like he's leaving the team, saying trash in his YouTube comments and stuff

To clarify, we don't know if he left left. He simply said he's not done anything for the THG project for the least year or so (despite one of the April updates has him claiming that as soon as lockdown ended he'd be working 24/7 to find an investor.)
He hasn't left the THG project.

I just looked at the THG website in the Team Page and then in the Crew Page. Tom's image and his position in the company is still up there. Besides if he had left, it would've been announced on their social media pages.

I wouldn't worry about the lack of updates. It's happened a few times before, and when updates do come they announce they've still been working away, contrary to what a lot of you people out there may think.

I don't hate the project, I mean, who wouldn't want to wander Titanic, every inch of her, to their heart's content?
There's just been issues with the game for years.
Also we don't know what the heck Tom is doing.

Looking at his personal channel, Part Time Explorer, whatever he dang well pleases that has nothing to do with the game.
Yeah I will say his Red Dead Redemption video... wasn't expecting that...

I understand where you are coming from - I feel similarly. A couple of basic points:
1. They are making an announcement this weekend as it happens (YouTube live stream), in their words: "A bunch of updates on the status of the game, our new direction, and insight into what's been happening" I am hoping that the "new direction" is that they will follow the general consensus and drop the elaborate fictional game concept and refocus on simply building the ship - that is what most if not all of the backers are really wanting.
2. Have you tried their "test game" Britannic: Patroness of the Mediterranean on Steam? It is a "virtual museum" experience. Water physics are basic at best, but I found the experience very immersive and I sincerely hope the direction the main game will now take.

I imagine this is the route the game is going now but it makes me very sad. I’ve been following the game since 2011 and donated money waaaay back to it. I was hoping for a Titanic: Adventure Out of Time style game when I donated, which is what it was practically described as. The fact this game was on a historically accurate, detailed version of the ship full of interesting factual information, historical NPCs and a full access tour mode made it too good to be true... but I was still excited for the game aspect. It will be great to explore the ship (assuming this still gets released) but it won’t give me the immersive experience I would have liked which will be disappointing after a decade of waiting and hoping for it. That’s just me though I guess.

We will have to wait and see what’s happening with regards their new direction and this legal business though.

So, today they plan to do the livestream they promised in February. The inner cynic in me is thinking that it'll be more, "Promises of change, but no concrete plan laid out," Though I'm hoping it'll have more to say than that.

I'm also hoping it's not just shoving all the blame they can on Tom and washing their hands of it. He's got an ego, and I don't like him as much as I did back in 2016-2019, but he's not the sole reason it's taken 10 years. While all of the feature creep may have been his idea, Matt and Kyle had the ability to say, "No, let's keep things focused on what can be done."

After watching the stream: Not as bad as I feared, but I'm still cautious. They've acknowledged the criticisms they received, and did _not_ throw Tom under the bus. That's a first important step.

There's a break down for what the game will have: Guided tour, Sinking, Narrative of some kind (though not to the extent that the original story was going to be), and an unspecific "And more!" No timeline (that I saw) for when they expect the Alpha to be ready, but they've announced another stream on the 24th to flesh out what the alpha is expected to contain.

Didn't watch past the pre vis, so I don't know if there was anything else I missed

I saw yesterday on the Titanic-Voyage RPG that Tom, or someone claiming to be Tom, setting up an "event" to get people to donate to THG. I didn't notice if it said where to go if you actually did want to donate, and I admit to being more amused by another "event" that "Mr. John Philips, Wireless Operator" set up to get people to gather in the potato storage room on E-deck. Other than that and this forum thread, I have no idea what happened between Tom and the others.

Does anyone happen to know if THG is doing their yearly Youtube livestream of the sinking in real time this year? I haven't seen an announcement for anything on their Youtube channel.

THG isn't, but Tom is on his personal channel, and is apparently having the authors of On a Sea of Glass co-hosting it.

The official story is that Tom parted amicably because of getting married, having a life outside of THG and wanting to do other things. However, prior to the livestream on the 10th, no one really knew anything other than Tom was out, had been out for a while, and that the February stream was delayed pending some unspecified "legal matters," which led to rumours that Tom was ousted and suing the company over it. And of course, in true THG fashion, the team never just plainly said what was going on, allowing rumours to fester, mixed in with some truths about people having bad experiences with Tom in the past.
