Thank Goodness the harbourmaster was nearby and able to speed to the rescue. Eyewitnesses have claimed that an American tourist from California was even closer but didn't notice the commotion. His story is that he was in fact much further away and settled in for a night in the pub, so nobody could have seen him near the scene. I'm not convinced, but maybe it was indeed a case of mistaken identity. The Californian asserts that he did glance out of the pub window at one point and spotted the mystery man gazing at something out at sea, but he himself was too far away to see what it was.
