White Star was paid about $5,000,000 for Titanic. This was done very promptly, as reported in The Times on 24 April 1912. The ship was worth about $7,000,000, so White Star lost money.

A great deal of money was paid out by life insurers and others. One estimate put the total at $12,000,000, but this is possibly incorrect, because it was not clear just who was insured.

Although the ship's insurance was arranged through Lloyds, the losses were spread over many underwriters and nobody lost a really large amount. The main result of the sinking was a large rise in premiums, because Insurers now knew that the big liners were not as safe as they thought.
