Titanic Replica in Belfast

Do you think that we will ever see a full scale Titanic replica built for static use at the Titanic Museum in Belfast since one is already being built in China.

If it ever was done it would have to be through private finance. There's no way in hell they'd put any taxpayers money into building a replica RMS Titanic over the NHS, police, education, transport etc and rightly so.

And would enough people visit the replica after the initial 12-18 month "novelty factor" wears off for the investors to make some kind of financial return in the long term ?

Admittedly I've never actually been to the museum in Belfast but an acquaintance of mine from Co. Kerry recently visited and told me he thought it was really poor and "too romanticised".

Personally I think it's better to admire the wonderful photographs we have of RMS Titanic and exercise our imaginations rather than build replicas. That's just my daft worthless opinion mind.

While it does sound like a nice idea, (aside from the financial, "being respectful, avoiding poor taste" and other issues), where would you build or place it in Belfast? The only suitable area would be the Thompson Drydock, and part of it's appeal is seeing the void where she would have been.

I agree. I've been to the Titanic Quater a couple of times and I think its fine the way she is now. I liked seeing the drydock and pump house the way they are. Financially I don't think it would ever happen. The Quater had to go thru a lot just to pull off the SS Nomadic project and that almost didn't happen. I couldn't see them being able to do a replica of the ship. The Quater has a lot to see but isn't overdone to the point of being a cheap theme park. JMHO.

It is a great shame what's happened to the pump house. Also I would add that the Nomadic still needs to get her mast refitted!

Back to topic, personally I feel something proposed like the above might* have worked since it would show the scale and outline^ without having to recreate all the riveting or plating, plus it's translucent appearance would make it look ghostly and give the sense of "gone, but not forgotten". Plus you could still walk through the drydock.

*I don't know how it could be kept re-enforced so it would't warp or be torn apart by severe winds. Also birds might be a problem as starlings were to the Britannic...

^I would add that someone needs to fix those lifeboats!
