I am relieved to note that these vessels had a comprehensive fire-fighting capability, including steam smothering.

The fire detection cabinets I remember used captive ping-pong balls elevated on the air-streams to show that the extracter fans were working!

Mauretania? Not as far back as the Great Pyramid of Cheops but certainly before the Olympic. Your information explains why the installations were not remarked upon but I would have thought it politic that the trade press should have given at least cursory acknowledgement that the usual fire safety systems were in place. It is after all important to anyone taking passage with all those soft furnishings and panelling about.
