Quite the storied career. 90 years in service is pretty remarkable. Good post.

Thanks for posting this. She was originally the Bear of Oakland, and started life as a civilian vessel (a sealer, I believe) although dragooned into service in both wars. Well-known on the West Coast. I remember the day she sank, while being towed to her new life - I think as a floating restaurant somewhere on the East Coast. I was a teenager in San Francisco then, with big dreams of sailing about the world. Profoundly sad that she was lost.
