I remember some of these impostors from news articles. I actually clipped out the reports of Robert James Hanna and John Jame Hollis - still have them somewhere. There was also a "Fireman Lewis Michelson" who Walter Lord reported as giving an interview to the Cedar Rapids Gazette.
Regarding McAuliffe, the British Inquiry transcript of Steward James Johnston's testimony spells it "McCuliffe." Also, notice the items found on Fireman William McQuillan's body, NO. 183:
EFFECTS - Shaving brush; soap; papers.
What? A shaving brush and no razor?
Others have suggested that the mysterious McAuliffe/McCuliffe may actually have been Fireman McQuillan.
