Useless bits of information Olympic

Hello,

I just started to look at Olympic’s maiden voyage (arriving in New York, June 21, 1912) passenger list/manifest, and I stumbled upon the page that mentions Ismay.

There was him (Ismay, Joseph Bruce) his wife, her maid and . . . you guessed it . . . Richard Fry and William Harrison.

Here are the statistics given:

Ismay, Joseph Bruce 49 - male, married, ship owner
Ismay, Julia F. 36 - female, married, wife
Attwall, Mary 28 - female, single, maid
Fry, Richard 38 - male, married, valet
Harrison, William H. 44 - male, married, private secretary

For all the last permanent place of residence was Liverpool. Ismay had paid the tickets for the first four people (on the list above), however Harrison is listed as paying his own fare. Mrs. Ismay was born in America (in New York). All were going to stay at Hotel St Regis, in New York City.

Bruce Ismay is listed as being a mere 5’10”, where’s it was generally believed he was 6’ tall. Complexion - dark, hair - brown, eyes - brown. Mrs. Ismay; 5’6”, complexion - dark, hair - fair, eyes - blue. Mary Attwall; 5’5”, complexion - fresh, hair - brown, eyes - brown. R. Fry; 5’7.5”, complexion - dark, hair - black, eyes - brown. W. Harrison; 5’9”, complexion - blond, hair - fair, eyes - grey. All, with the exception of Mrs. Ismay were born in England.

Hi Daniel,

Many thanks for the new information. This certainly brings us closer to knowing what Fry and Harrison might have looked like. I note that Harrison's age is given as 44 as opposed to 40.

Hi,

Thank you for reading this post. This info comes from Olympic's maiden voyage passenger manifest, which had to be filled out for every ship on arrival to the US, regardless of port.

Luckily the above party (amongst others) were considered "alien passengers" thus specific details were given for them. Others who were US citizens, simply had their names and age recorded.

I'm not sure, but depending with how time goes and if I'm able to do it, (if there is any interest at all) I might transcribe Olympic's entire list (or in sections as there are a great many pages to transcribe) and Phil Hind might be able to put it up for all to see.

I was rather excited about the information on Harrison and Fry, as very little about them and their age was known.

It might be safer to add a year to their ages, for Titanic's voyage.

Daniel.

Hi there,

The information is indeed very interesting. I think it's a good idea to put this at ET. Are there any Titanic passengers on the list too?

Regards,
Rolf

Rolf, well I thought that Ismay, Fry and Harrison were Titanic passengers ... I dunno I could be wrong :-)

Other than that I don't know yet, that's why I have the list, because I want to find that out, amongst other things ...

Daniel.

Was Ismay aboard Titanic?!? Yes, Daniel you're totally right. I said it a bit wrong and I knew that this answer would come. Doesn't matter...

I meant indeed if there were other Titanic passengers, beside the Ismay party, aboard.

Hi Daniel,

Very interesting information! Where did you get your copy of the manifest? Is there anything similar that lists the crew?

Warm Regards,

Cal

Hi guys, thank you for reading and responding,

I'll try to get the list transcribed as soon as possible, but no promises. The list is about 50 pages long and some additional 50 pages that also had to be signed and filled in.

I got the list from NARA. I don't know, but I don't think there is anything similar for the crew. The crew was probably supposed to remain on the ship and return with it, where as the passengers disembarked and stayed in the US. If I find out anything else, Cal, I'll let you know.

Daniel.
