USS Constitution Wins 2011 President's Volunteer Service Award

CHARLESTOWN, Mass. (NNS) -- USS Constitution won the gold level 2011 President's Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) for community service in Charlestown, Mass., June 22.

The PVSA is divided into three levels: bronze, silver and gold. Groups must volunteer a minimum of 1,000 hours of community service to qualify for the gold level.

"This is one of my favorite times of the year," said Cmdr. Tim Cooper, Constitution's 71st commanding officer. "For the entire Harborfest event, we will be showcasing more aspects of the ship's history. Visitors will have the opportunity to see my crew perform a variety of time-honored maritime evolutions they wouldn't normally see during other times of the year, so I look forward to a great turn-out."

USS Constitution Recognizes Three New Chiefs Underway

CHARLESTOWN, Mass. (NNS) -- USS Constitution promoted three Sailors to the rank of chief petty officer (CPO) while underway Sept. 16.

The promotion ceremony took place at 9 a.m. and ended at 10 a.m. The underway commenced immediately thereafter, and Constitution fired a 21-gun salute to Fort Independence on Castle Island.

For those who have never had the opportunity to visit or see up close the world's oldest commissioned warship afloat, retired Chief Electronics Technician Gary DeWitt provided the opportunity. He loaned NHB an exact wooden replica model to display for all to enjoy.
