USS General Hoyt S Vandenberg slated to become an artificial reef

There was interesting piece in the paper today, about the US Navy ship the USS General Hoyt S. Vandenberg-
Pictures depicted tug boats pulling the very odd looking dedomissioned missle tracker ship away from her dock in Ft. Eustis VA. She was towed to Norfolk, and will later be sunk off Key West FL and turned into an artificial reef. Michael, do you know anything about this ship? What class is she? Are there many ships of this type in service? She is a very odd looking ship....

I don't know an awful lot about her beyond her final role as a missile range instrumentation ship. Since this involved tracking ICBM's and SLBM's from launch to final impact of the re-entry vehicals, such ships tended to be loaded with all sorts of tracking equipment.
