Vents and Fans During Sinking

Hello all,

I have a few questions regarding the fans and vents during the sinking. Would they have been running during the sinking? Are they automatic or manually controlled?

I imagine the vents and fans on the boat deck that had exposed motors could withstand the weather, but certainly not submersion.
