Vestris- A Disaster Impossible

The S/S VESTRIS sank 200 MILES OF VIRGINIA on Nov. 12 1928 with the loss of about 100 lives. However, the liner sank in broad daylight and many warning signs prevailed to the passengers before the event. However, a photo was captured before the ship went down, showing rowdy passengers approaching the lifeboats in a normal wy. What caused the high death toll if it sank so slowly in conditions not mediocre?
