Hello:

The one thing I appreciate the most about our local library is the free magazines which greet you upon entry. Most are *has beens* from subscribers.

I always like to strum through NEWSWEEK and TIME in hopes of finding some good news. In their 3 June '02 release, NEWSWEEK featured, of their *transition* section, (sounds so much nicer than obituary :) was WALTER LORD 84, accompanied with a photograph of a seemingly enthusiastic young LORD.

The article goes on to mention his stint with the Office of Strategic Services during WWII. His friends included historian Arthur Schlesinger Jr. and William Casey.

On a voyage to Europe in 1944 through waters infested by German subs, he regaled fellow passengers with stories about the TITANIC. "That's not what we wanted to hear," said Schlesinger last week.

(Thanks again Mr. LORD from such enthusiasm ;-)
