This may have been asked before, but where did they put the garbage? I know why certain Naval ships are photographed from one side only, but did Titanic store her waste, or give it the ol' heave ho'?
-Don
In that day and age, it simply went over the side. That included anything from plain old trash, to sewage...and the latter going over the side even in port. In a photo of the Titanic fitting out in Belfast, you'll notice a shed on the starboard side up on the forcastle with a chute going right down to the river.
It's an outhouse.
You definately did not want to cruise under this in a small boat.
Don and Alicia, I don't think there's a thread of that name in T/C/D. Try the one in this (Life on Board) section called 'Paying homage to Mr Thomas J Crapper'. Not for the faint-hearted!
Sorry guys! It was my mistake, the Waste Disposal thread is archived cause it's been around for a while. You have to go into the 26 September, 2001 Archive in Technical/ Construction/ Design at the bottom of the page to find the thread. Sorry for the confusion. And yes, I enjoyed the "Paying homage to Mr. Thomas J Crapper" thread, it was hilarious.
