Which boat is pictured here

All,

The picture below of an underfilled lifeboat approaching Carpathia intrigues me. The Library of Congress owns this particular print but it's not reproduced much. At least I have seldom seen it. I do remember that it illustrated Rostron's article in Scribner's in 1913.

Does anyone know which boat this is? It has been pointed out to me that it might be Boat 1. Personally, I have always believed # 1 reached Carpathia at dawn. This looks to have been taken later in the day.

Any ideas?

Randy

PS) I'm sorry the image is so small. All LOC sample pics are in this tiny format. If anyone has a larger example of the photo, please do post it. It looks to me there are at least 12-15 people aboard.

Whew! Randy, your eyes are *much* better than mine obviously. %-)

From what I can see (and it's really not much) this almost looks like another view of Hichens and the Lifeboat 6 contingent coming in. NARA has a few larger, reasonably clear lifeboat pics, two of which are LB#6, the others Colapsible D alone and/or in tow by LB#14. The sample above at least looks similar to one of those.

I'll email you another shot I have that I strongly believe is a blow-up from the original of that sample image. I say that because the exact same "crop lines" shown in the sample above appear in the larger JPG, and the wave patterns are identical directly in front of and to the right of the boat.

(Frankly, I'm not sure where I located this, so I'm reluctant to just upload it -- wouldn't want to violate anyone's copyright, if extant. Plus I've never had much success with uploads to the Board, anyway.)

Cheers,
John

I would have suggested boat #6 too, mainly because of its obvious resemblance to the photo on P.154 of "An Illustrated History". My suspicion, therefore, is that the photo in the book is a close up of Randy's pic above. Unfortunately, I'm uncertain as to what evidence existed originally to link the T:AIH photo to boat #6 as the individual occuapants are in no way discernable (unlike the more widely circulated image in the same aforementioned book on the following page where Hitchens, Fleet, and Maj. Peuchen are clearly identifiable). Will have to analyse the surrounding ripples more carefully ;)

Regards,
Ben

No, because its too empty for boat 13. It could only be one of the very empty boats, these boats with not more than 30 - 35 occupants. I can only guess its one of the starboard boats, because of the several mens on board. Probably boat 7 or 5.
I thought anybody would know it for sure.
