Who do you think that ship was

There are many candidates for a mystery ship. You might want to pick up a copy of Senan Molony's book, "A Ship Accused", where he speculates about the possibilities. Go to the Titanic Book Site (web address is on the home page of this site) for ordering information.

Good question. While not neseccerily exculpatory for the Califorian...and you'll have to read the evidence and decide for yourself...there's really little reason that a second or even multiple players might not have been involved. The North Atlantic was and is pretty heavily traveled and a lot of ships were close by at the time. Whether any were actually close enough to do any good will be a matter forever open to debate.

If you wish to read the testimony for yourself...and I strongly urge you to do so...go to the Titanic Inquiry Project at http://www.titanicin quiry.org/

Tracy: Can you name a few? (Preferably ones that weren't dismissed outright in 1912?)

I was personally unaware that there were *any* other legitimate candidates.

My feelings are that while other ships MAY have been in the area we KNOW that the Californian was. Anything else is speculation. It's no wonder the good ole Californian gets picked on-we know for sure she was in the neighborhood.

if i was to pick a 2nd mystery ship it would be the Samson and a 3rd would be the Mount Temple.if it was not the Californian i would say 1 of theese 2 just dont know what one.

As the Samson was nowhere near the Titanic at the time of the sinking, I think this may be safely discounted. As to the Mount Temple, she was stopped cold on the western side of the icefield which I understand she did not reach until after the Titanic had gone down.

Michael, was it you who said there was new "evidence" that surfaced, saying there was a Russian ship in the area between the Californian and Titanic that also hit a berg and went down? How true do you think this story to be, if at all? Maybe it is just wishful thinking to believe this may be the missing link, and be able to satisfy both sides as correct in their recollections that night. Was this a news story somewhere? I am certainly curious.

Colleen, the story of Natasha and her brave Russian crew was a fiendish April Fool plot, designed by one Dave Gittins and inflicted on the world by Maureen Zottoli.

Certain nameless people came in like the tide. I'll be interested to see if the story has a life of its own.

Egads! If you can't trust Dave and Maureen, who can you trust?? (Eeek!)

Gotta track that one down for sure now. Natasha, eh? (Was the fourth ship the "Boris"?) :^)

John

Nope, it was the Rocky & Bullwinkle! The bottom of the Atlantic is getting mighty cluttered up thereabouts!

Other than the Samson, there could have been any number of other illegal sealers in the area who would never own up to being there.
I have to side with Leslie Reade. The Samson was not there.
The Flying Dutchman, perhaps?

But Don, if they'd been *there*, it wouldn't be illegal. Titanic didn't sink within anybody's territorial waters as defined in 1912. So if someone *were* sealing nearby when the disaster happened, about the only thing they might have to fear would be ... um ... seal pirates?? ;^)

Mike: This gives me a novel idea for an all-cartoon production. Can you imagine it: Bruce Ismay portrayed with the ultimate gusto by none other than Snidely Whiplash? :^)

Bad ET jokesters!!! Bad Bad!!! I had come in from an 18 hour day and was too tired to take much notice, then when I gained some sence, the thread was gone and I was not able to find where it was mentioned. Blame it on Mike Standart as one of his 3448 posts. Good cover huh?
Sigh. I better go find an outfit to wear today that goes well with egg yoke.
