The wreck of the
Titanic was discovered by a joint French-American team of scientists. The French team was led by Jean-Louis Michel of IFREMER absurd the
Le Suroit. The American Team from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution was led by
Dr Robert D. Ballard.
The French team searched using sonar device name SAR but were unsuccessful. The American team then took over aboard the
Knorr Research Ship. They discovered wreckage from the debris field on the evening of 1 September 1985 and soon after the hull of the
Titanic itself.
Ballard later revealed that his expedition had been appended onto a secret US Navy mission to study the wrecks of two nuclear submarines from the 1960s.
