Why do people dislike the 1997 Titanic movie?

Take the romance and a few other bits out and you have a decent film..
That I agree. Also, there were plenty of factual incidences and events that could have been added for genuine thrill effects.

I am not sure about decent, but it does make an interesting version of the film. I know as I have done just that - I edited out the fictional romance storyline and just left in the historical sections. It's called the "1912 History Edition" and if you own a legal copy of the original film it is free to view/download:

I wish they had made it with Molly Brown as the main character. Or Charles Lightoller. Now THAT would be cool. Making up characters is kind'a like saying: Hey, there are over 1,500 people, half of which were heroes, to choose from... Nah, I'll make up my own cringy characters that fall in love on a ship, and then do a very dramatic and obviously pushing-it scene were one of them predicts the future and dies. Meanwhile I'll also say that Murdoch, a hero no doubt, comits murder and then upon realizing it... comits suicide. What could go wrong?

I have just finished watching it. Its a true masterpiece what you did to it. I love the way you ended it, too.

It’s more annoying when some people think that Jack and Rose were real people and the Titanic was fictional!

Yeah! Like, why couldn't James Cameron make a scene where the Titanic almost hit the S.S. New York leaving Southampton? The fact that they missed each other by mere feet should be thrilling enough! Or that instead of the 3rd class passengers being locked down in the ship, why couldn't they depict a scene where panicked passengers are running down Scotland Road, unaware that they are passing the entrance to the grand staircase, meanwhile the viewer knows that they need only take a right turn and they'll be led to safety? Something that bothers me is that its advertised as "the story of the Titanic", meanwhile only 1/3 of the movie is ACTUALLY the Titanic!

The engine room, and associated engine mechanicals were great., filmed in one of 2 surviving Liberty ships (ww2),which used same type of recip/triple expansion design....the scene on the fantail, where the Irish priest tells the faithful to 'be prepared to meet god" ? Thats abit heavy, all those poor folks 'met' was ice water and a freezing death...
