"Why They Sank Titanic" video

Has anyone else seen the pretty laughable 'Why They Sank Titanic' video? It's an hour long 'documentary' version of the Gardiner Olympic/Titanic switch theory really, although his name appears nowhere on it. There's a lot of talk from our host, some laughable, perhaps even libellous 'recreations' with actors as the likes of Ismay and EJ plotting things, and some nicely-rendered if innacurate computer work showing things like various ships positions that night, and the Olympic/Hawke collision. (That's Olympic with an enclosed promenade, too!) There is even footage of the supposed revealing of the name on the bow wreck in '87, with the letters 'T I T M P' visible, although it states that the footage is 'enhanced'. Looks more like total fakery to me...and even the already twisted 'facts' of Gardiner's original theory get mangled in the re-telling, particularly with highlighted original photos that supposedly show porthole differences between the ships and all that! A pretty laughable effort, but one with it's own website at whytheysanktitanic.com...opinions?

BTW, Mike, you're absolutely correct; the whole thing is a crock of caca-doodoo. This whole rediculous ship switch thing has been addressed several times, not only by myself, but by several other members of this board. I've also seen Bruce Beveridge's articles in Voyage on this one. It's about as firmly refuted as anything can be.

Gardiner himself fessed up to that just after the wreck was located and examined.

What bugs me is that there are going to be a lot of people who don't know any better who are going to buy into this.

Personally I hope the film is a great success. If it bombs utterly in the US and Britain we might not get to see it in Oz and I could do with a belly laugh!

My offer to play Sir Robert Finlay still stands.

Of course I know the theory is a crock-I'm more curious what people thought of stuff like the Olympic/Hawke collision rendering, or the (ahem) 'enhanced' footage of the lettering on the wreck...what a chuckle though!

The pic looks pretty dramatic...more like melodramatic. In any event, there was nothing about the damage that was irrepairable. And the last I looked, the Olympic wasn't truly rammed, it was more like the Hawke was drawn in by the larger ship's suction.

As to "enhanced"...that should have a few red flags waving.

Hi, everyone,
Checked out the link and to me it looks like a "Video/DVD to forget! Total garbage. The only reason I'd get it is to add to my collection of TITANIC videos.
The only one worse than this turkey is "Terror on the TITANIC".

um, when was this made? i do know that from EARLY on there had been a supposition that this "switch" might have been made. but shortly after the Titanic wreck was discovered it was POSITIVELY identified as the Titanic. and they're still trying to drag this hypothesis around? all i can do is laff. i don't think i will watch this one.

I always wonder when I see such lockstep unanimity about the Titanic-Olympic switch. It actually makes considerable sense, economically and circumstantially, that an already damaged ship (Olympic, restamped Titanic) would sink in three hours, not the actual undamaged Titanic on its virgin Maiden voyage. This, in the final analysis is really just an inability of the American hoi polloi -- the baboosie, yes that is you-- to think outside the box, preferring to nest in the truly laughable story -- which is the original story we have all been told about Titanic. The documentary discussed here may not have gotten everything right, but this proves you cannot leave it to Americans to ever solve a crime or mystery, or even iron out a few wrinkles. Americans are, and continue to be, the true lunk-heads of the world. You people need to get out more. All the economic incentives are there, the means, the motive, the opportunity.
