William Smith

I am in the process of doing my family tree and I am working on information provided by my mother. According to her my great grandfather is William Smith and was a fireman / stoker on the titanic. He had two children called Bert and Ann and possibly a third child. My mother can remember his wife getting the pension fund that came as a result of the Titanic sinking. I think she might be wrong and that he actually died on the Britannic.

Any information that any one can provide me on my great grandfather would be appreciated.

Thanks

Sue

Hi Sue.

Lester's quite right. Fireman William Smith was apparently twenty-nine at the time of the Britannic's loss. I have him down as coming from London, according to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission records. I'm not sure if that's a place of birth, or what. He's recorded on the Tower Hill memorial.

I remember there was a Bert Smith who survived the disaster.

Best wishes,

Mark.

Thank you for your replies. Is there anyway of confirming that the William Smith listed is the person I am looking for?? Ie. Through the pension fund on if he had a wife and children and who they were etc.

Hi Mark
I don't know a lot only what i'm told by my mother. She said he was a fireman on the Titanic and the only William Smith, fireman, I can find is on Britannic. I know he had a wife, son (Bert), daughter (ann) and possibly another son. She can remember her grandmother getting the widows pension for William . I know its not a lot to work with but i'm hoping someone can help me.
Sue
