Thanx for the link to this nice site! Though I didn't knew the Oceanos, it's interesting to see the demolition of a ship within 10 years. The remains on the haunting pictures still look very intact. I wonder if Titanic's wreck would have looked the same in 1922.
Thanks for the link, Eric. It made for some interesting viewing, debris field and all. BTW, is the ship largely in one piece? The photos presented weren't all that revealing in that regard.
Yes, the ship is still in one piece as far as I know. Do you recall seeing the film of her sinking? It was broad daylight, and her bow went down until she stood at 90 degrees, her stern out of the water. She then slowly settled, still at 90 degrees, until she disappeared. Quite a sight....
Yep...I remember it allright. They had it on some special dealing with disasters and rescues on the Discovery channel. The helicopters barely got the people off in time.
i sailed on the oceanos - and but for the price of a plane ticket - would have been on her fatal cruise - i watched her sink via live television - the 2nd to last image here shows me on board after her leaving durban - the stern image is of her leaving east london on her fatal cruise
