Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Lewis Gillespie of this city and Newport, R. I., have announced that the engagement of of their eldest daughter, Miss Eileen S. S. Gillespie, to John Jacob Astor has been canceled.
The wedding had been planned for the afternoon of Feb. 6 at St. Thomas Church. Both bridal attendants and ushers had been chosen by Miss Gillespie and Mr. Astor, although invitations to the marriage had not been sent out. The engagement was announced by Mr. and Mrs. Gillespie on Dec. 16.
Miss Gillespie is a granddaughter of Mrs. Watts Sherman and the late Mr. Sherman and of the late Major Gen. Lewis Gillespie, U. S. A., who served on General Sheridans staff in the Civil War.
Miss Gillespie is a member of the Junior League and an enthusiast on out-of-door sports, having won several tennis tournaments in the Newport Casino. She made her début last December, only a week before the announcement of her engagement to Mr. Astor.
Mr. Astor is a son of the late Colonel John Jacob Astor, who lost his life on the Titanic, and of Mrs. Enzo Fiermonte. He is a descendant of the original John Jacob Astor.
Mr. Astor was 21 years old on Aug. 14 when came into a $3,000,000 trust fund left him by his father, and now materially increased. An engagement to Donna Christiana Torlonis, daughter of Prince Torlonia of Rome and Mrs. Elsie Moore Torlonia of New York, was widely rumored a year ago but was denied by both families.
Mr. Astors mother is the former Miss Madeleine Force, daughter of Mrs. William H. Force and the late Mr. Force. Several years after the death of Colonel Astor she was married to William K. Dick, from whom she was divorced in Reno. She was married to Enzo Fiermonte,a former middle weight pugilist, in a hospital where she was recuperating from a broken shoulder suffered in a fall.
